Here’s a simple Urad Chawal (Urad Dal with Rice) recipe:

Ingredients

For Urad Dal:

  • 1 cup split black gram (urad dal)

  • 3 cups water

  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)

  • 1 medium tomato (finely chopped)

  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 1-2 green chilies (chopped)

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

For Chawal (Rice):

  • 1 cup basmati rice

  • 2 cups water

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ghee (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Urad Dal

  1. Wash the urad dal thoroughly and soak it for 15-20 minutes.

  2. In a pressure cooker or pot, add ghee/oil and heat it.

  3. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute.

  5. Add tomatoes and cook until soft.

  6. Add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Stir well.

  7. Add the soaked dal and mix well. Pour water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles (or simmer for 30 minutes if cooking in a pot).

  8. Once cooked, mash the dal slightly for a creamy texture. Add garam masala and mix.

  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Step 2: Cook the Rice

  1. Wash the rice 2-3 times and soak for 15 minutes.

  2. In a pot, boil 2 cups of water with salt and ghee.

  3. Add the soaked rice and cook on a low flame until all the water is absorbed (about 10-12 minutes).

  4. Fluff with a fork and serve hot.

Serving Suggestion

Serve hot urad dal with steamed rice and a side of pickle, papad, and yogurt for a delicious and comforting meal!
